CRIME NEWS

  • Early Tuesday morning, Fayetteville police detained a suspect who knew the victim after a woman was fatally shot on Gillespie Street at 3:15 a.m. on the 2800 block—no names have been released.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • A woman was shot and killed Tuesday morning in the 2800 block of Gillespie Street in Fayetteville, police said, and a suspect who knew her was taken into custody while investigators continued their work (the victim's name was withheld until family was notified).  WRAL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tomorrow at 7 p.m., the Fayetteville-Saint Avold Friendship Alliance will screen ‘The Girl Who Wore Freedom’ at Cameo Art House Theatre with a Q&A led by director Christian Taylor. A delegation from Saint Avold arrived today and will tour local military sites before the screening—demonstrating the strong ties between our sister cities.  Up & Coming Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • April is Autism Awareness Month and Beyond the Spectrum Institute opened last summer at the Eutaw Shopping Center on Bragg Boulevard to offer a tailored education for children with autism. Founded by Dr. Jessica Respus, the school uses new tools like robotics (from RoboKind) and virtual reality to help students improve their behavior and academics.  Up & Coming Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Hope Mills Town Hall on Monday, commissioners voted unanimously to accept new terms from Cumberland County that change the sales tax agreement from a per capita to an ad valorem model. The amendment lets the town keep 50% of sales tax revenue above fiscal year 2022 levels in fiscal year 2025, saving an estimated $156,000 based on fiscal 2024 data.  CityView
  • On April 8, Cumberland County commissioners lifted the suspension on construction of the Crown Event Center project after reviewing confidential budget and scope reports—so far, the county has spent about $35 million on design, planning, and site work. A special meeting scheduled for 1 p.m. April 14 will offer more details—official updates on cost and timeline are still expected.  The Fayetteville Observer
