ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Three E.E. Smith High School football players—Trevor Merritt, Jai’Hyon Elliott, and Nick Williams—died in a crash on Rosehill Road while heading to a birthday celebration and were honored Tuesday evening at South View High School with a balloon release, moment of silence and special presentation; the game was postponed and Fayetteville plans a study of the crash site following several past incidents. - ➤ Cumberland County Animal Services is revising its operations after its director resigned in August and staff raised concerns over high call volume and enforcement issues—county officials plan to implement a new call tree to route 800 monthly calls and update policies with help from county IT, legal teams, and the Sheriff’s Office. County staff also shared survey results from over 1,400 responses regarding the future use of the Gillespie Street parking lot, with many residents favoring community-centered ideas such as parks or youth programs.
