  • Children in Cumberland County can join free trunk-or-treat and trick-or-treat events starting today at locations like Lafayette Ford and Longhorn Steakhouse, with candy and fun planned for families.   • Chefs for Change is raising funds to combat homelessness in Durham while the RDC Marathon collects donations for ALS research on the American Tobacco Trail—Fayetteville will host the Fall Dogwood Festival for three nights starting October 15.  ABC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cape Fear Valley Health lost Medicaid money when North Carolina cut rates from 3% to 10% on Oct. 1 due to a budget deadlock. The cuts affect hospital care (including ambulance services) and may lower patient access until lawmakers meet on Oct. 20 for new funding.  CityView

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a tragic single-car accident claimed the lives of three Golden Bulls football players, the game against South View will be played on Tuesday, Oct 14 at 6 p.m. on Randy Ledford Field with tributes starting about 30 minutes before kickoff — the Week 9 game with Seventy-First has been moved to Saturday, Oct 18 at 10 a.m. while South View's game at Douglas Byrd will be rescheduled with kickoff time to be announced.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • UNC running back Caleb Hood retired from football on Oct. 10 after a season marked by injuries, and coach Bill Belichick said (in a statement) that Hood was a respected teammate who worked hard on and off the field.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • Fayetteville fall sports playoffs will begin on Oct. 13 and run through early December with girls tennis, boys soccer, cross country, football, girls golf and volleyball scheduled; the NCHSAA released brackets showing teams like Terry Sanford and Cape Fear earning early byes — local teams are set to compete in multiple rounds.  The Fayetteville Observer
