- ➤ Local Triangle area food pantries say the government shutdown and funding cuts are straining food supplies — Board Chairman Michael Burger said his pantry, which feeds about 2,000 families a month, may run out of food for furloughed workers. Nonprofit leader Ron Pringle reported that other local groups are preparing emergency food supply boxes as demand grows. WRAL
- ➤ AT&T is offering digital literacy workshops at the Cumberland County Public Library so that Fayetteville seniors can learn to use smartphones and computers safely—teaching skills like video chatting and setting strong passwords. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fayetteville State University announced that its nursing program is now called the Cape Fear Valley School of Nursing after receiving a $2 million gift from Cape Fear Valley Health on Sept. 30th—university leaders said they will add lab space, hire more faculty, and expand enrollment to ease the local nursing shortage. The renaming and planned growth build on earlier investments meant to strengthen the healthcare workforce. The Fayetteville Observer
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Market House roundabout will be closed for five days from Oct. 6 to Oct. 10 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily as crews remove scaffolding from the historic building—detour routes along Hay, Green, Person and Gillespie Streets will be clearly marked. The road will also be closed on Oct. 20 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. so workers can reface the clocks in its spire—finalizing the first phase of improvements. The Fayetteville Observer
- ➤ Fort Bragg will start soil tests in neighborhoods with homes built before 1978—officials said there is no recent evidence of increased lead risk and more details will be shared soon. The Fayetteville Observer
