COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Retired Gen. William 'Buck' Kernan—a decorated Vietnam veteran and former 18th Airborne Corps commander—died at his home in Pinehurst on Sept. 2 and will be honored with a celebration of life on Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in downtown Fayetteville.  The Fayetteville Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fayetteville officials announced an update to the playground at the Dorothy D. Gilmore Adaptive Recreation Center to install new accessible equipment. The project will replace outdated facilities — including a wheelchair merry-go-round and ramp access — and is expected to finish by mid-November using $206,204 in city funds.  CityView
  • Deno Hondros, a realtor and two-term council member, is running for reelection in District 9. He has served on key committees — including public safety and infrastructure—and says his experience makes him the best candidate for the council.  CityView

SPORTS NEWS

  • UNC football struggled early in the season with blowout losses including a 34-9 defeat at UCF as coach Bill Belichick said the team will work to fix key errors—aiming for improvement. With challenging ACC matchups ahead including contests with Stanford and Wake Forest, the Tar Heels must win four more games to become bowl eligible.  The Fayetteville Observer
