- ➤ Retired Gen. William 'Buck' Kernan—a decorated Vietnam veteran and former 18th Airborne Corps commander—died at his home in Pinehurst on Sept. 2 and will be honored with a celebration of life on Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in downtown Fayetteville. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fayetteville officials announced an update to the playground at the Dorothy D. Gilmore Adaptive Recreation Center to install new accessible equipment. The project will replace outdated facilities — including a wheelchair merry-go-round and ramp access — and is expected to finish by mid-November using $206,204 in city funds. CityView
- ➤ Deno Hondros, a realtor and two-term council member, is running for reelection in District 9. He has served on key committees — including public safety and infrastructure—and says his experience makes him the best candidate for the council. CityView

- ➤ UNC football struggled early in the season with blowout losses including a 34-9 defeat at UCF as coach Bill Belichick said the team will work to fix key errors—aiming for improvement.
