EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pamela Story, the social work coordinator at Cumberland County Schools, was reappointed to North Carolina’s Interagency Council for Coordinating Homelessness Programs to help homeless students enroll and succeed. She works with nearly 900 homeless students each year and will push for better housing assistance and smoother enrollment processes—drawing on her local experience to improve services.  CityView

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Robeson County commissioners delayed a vote on expanding the landfill due to PFAS concerns linked to over 5,000 tons of waste from Chemours’ Fayetteville Works plant—testing of nearby wells is underway with a final report expected in December.  CityView
  • Chemours asked the state for permission to expand PFAS production at its Fayetteville Works plant by doubling capacity at one unit and increasing output by 40% at another—this revised plan includes extra pollution controls and is under review by DEQ while local advocates call for stronger water safety measures. The expansion request comes as past pollution issues continue to affect local water quality.  WRAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hope Mills officials met with state auditor representatives in August after an anonymous complaint was filed about local events such as a Heritage Park ribbon-cutting and a Hope Mills Lake fishing derby—town staff have not been given a copy of the complaint. The auditor’s office has not confirmed or provided a timeline for the investigation’s conclusion—updates are pending.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • Travis Hamed is running for Fayetteville City Council in District 8—he vows to boost public safety, streamline budgeting, and spur economic growth by fully supporting police and addressing stalled projects. He will lead efforts to hold capital projects accountable so our community grows safer and stronger.  CityView
  • CityView sent out questionnaires to candidates running in Fayetteville’s 2025 municipal elections. The primary election will occur on Oct 7—early voting will run from Sept 18 to Oct 4—and the top two candidates in each race will advance to the general election on Nov 4.  CityView
  • CityView Staff published candidate questionnaires for Fayetteville elections on September 19 and 18 — covering mayor, city council, and Spring Lake Board contests, and early voting for the primary will end on Oct.4.  CityView
  • Shaun McMillan, a longtime Fayetteville resident and retired Army officer—also a teacher and community organizer—is running for City Council District 8 to improve community safety and address funding cuts, housing shortages, and local economic issues. He aims to unite community groups and expand the Office of Community Safety to ensure transparency and build a stronger network of local support.  CityView
  • Fayetteville Mayor candidate Mario Benavente, a former City Council member and attorney, is running to boost public safety, economic growth, and youth programs—he will build on the gun violence study and the Office of Community Safety to address mental health, homelessness, and addiction. He also vows to enforce stricter contracting standards on city projects to protect taxpayers and improve service delivery.  CityView
  • James L. Thomas lll is a lifelong Fayetteville resident and manager at Skyzone now studying at Wake Forest who is running for City Council District 1 to improve affordable housing, youth programs, and transparent city projects—he plans to work with local groups and law enforcement to address noise, fast cars and other community issues.  CityView
  • Stephon Ferguson is running for Fayetteville City Council District 1 and will focus on growth, safety, and opportunities for local businesses. The candidate is a veteran and former reporter who plans to work with community leaders to boost jobs and services—his local experience will help Fayetteville thrive—by building strong community partnerships.  CityView
