  • Veteran community leader Sharon Moyer is leading a Giving Tuesday campaign to raise funds for CityView and local journalism by urging Fayetteville neighbors to donate through the Cumberland Community Foundation — her 35 years of local news experience shows that a strong free press helps residents stay informed about local issues. Neighbors are encouraged to contribute to keep local coverage active and ensure community voices are heard.  CityView
  • A Cumberland County family lost nearly everything in a devastating house fire early Sunday morning and is asking the community for help with donations of clothes, shoes, and blankets—while the fire department and American Red Cross provide immediate assistance with housing and medications.  WRAL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fayetteville will welcome Cavender’s Boot City on Friday, Sept. 26 as it opens a 14,000-square-foot store in the former Party City spot at the Fayetteville Pavilion shopping center on 2065 Skibo Road—selling Western wear from popular brands like Ariat and Wrangler and offering boot fitting services.  The Fayetteville Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cumberland County has used the University of Utah Virtual Social Work Trainer since February to help workers practice home safety checks—by simulating welfare visits—and seven counties have requested more information as the program already cut turnover in Children Services and earned awards. Representatives from Cumberland County have partnered with Fayetteville State University and the University of Utah to spread this training statewide.  CityView
  • Fort Bragg leaders broke ground on a new child development center on Sept 12 to help cut a waitlist of over 1,000 children and add care for 338 kids aged six weeks to five. The center is set to open in late 2026 or early 2027 and hire nearly 100 staff—an effort to ease local child care shortages for soldiers’ families.  CityView
  • City officials and the Hurley family unveiled a monument on Hay Street on Wednesday, Sept. 10, honoring former Mayor Bill Hurley who served from 1981 to 1987—local leaders gathered to mark his legacy.  The Fayetteville Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bianca Harvey, a Fayetteville native and former teacher, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer after severe stomach pains and built a large online following with her dance videos on TikTok; she will host the Battle with B in Blue Gala on Sept. 27—3 p.m. to 6 p.m.—at the John D. Fuller Recreation Center to raise awareness and support a fellow patient.  The Fayetteville Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eight Fayetteville-area high school athletes are nominated for Athlete of the Week after standout performances from Sept. 8—12, with highlights including a volleyball player who recorded 55 kills and a quarterback who accounted for five touchdowns—voters must submit a headshot for their nominee by 6 p.m. on Sept. 18.  The Fayetteville Observer
