COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds took part in the Fayetteville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Segra Stadium on Sept. 11—participants wore badges of fallen firefighters to remember their service. Fire Chief Kevin Dove led the climb that brought the community together in tribute.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • On Thursday, community members, law enforcement and military joined commemorative stair climbs at UNC Chapel Hill, NC State and Durham Bulls and attended a ceremony at Fort Bragg to mark 24 years since Sept. 11, 2001—participants at UNC climbed 2,071 steps to honor first responders while others in Raleigh and Durham also gathered to remember the fallen.  WRAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Fayetteville State University received an email on Thursday alerting students, staff, and faculty to a potential threat amid lockdowns at other HBCUs—authorities said the campus will continue operating as state and federal agencies investigate. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said no viable threat exists and will respond as needed.  ABC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ceremonies took place on September 11 as communities across central NC honored the 9/11 attacks—participants at UNC Chapel Hill climbed 2,071 stairs to remember the firefighters who risked their lives. Other groups gathered in Raleigh and Knightdale to pay their respects and mark the day.  ABC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayetteville State University reached record enrollment with 7,628 students and launched a 10-year plan worth $154.2M to build new facilities—these include the completed Bronco Pride Hall, a planned health and wellness center, a new College Education building, and proposals for a food truck park, parking deck, and military academic center. University officials said the projects will be finished mostly within five years from 2023—reflecting steady growth and local commitment.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • Educators from Wake, Durham and Cumberland counties met to discuss teen violence and its links to challenges at home, in schools and in the community. They explained that mentoring programs and better gun safety may help curb the issue—efforts that need a unified community response.  ABC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Veteran EMS manager Garry Crumpler was appointed as Cumberland County’s director of Emergency Services on September 10 and has 18 years of experience in fire, rescue, EMS and emergency planning—he began his career as a volunteer at Gray’s Creek Fire Department at age 16. He will now lead the county’s public safety efforts.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • Cumberland County commissioners voted 5-2 on Thursday to seek proposals to renovate the old Crown Arena and Crown Theatre with spending capped at $100 million—ensuring the venues meet ADA standards and have seating for 2,500 to 3,000. County Manager Clarence Grier said plans for improved courthouse parking will be ready by November—while the public can submit comments through Sept. 15 with survey results to be reviewed on Oct. 9.  CityView

  • During NICU Awareness Month, a Fayetteville mother shared how Cape Fear Valley Hospital's NICU staff helped her through a difficult time when she left the hospital with balloons and gift bags but without her baby—her words show the strong care and support the NICU community brings to families.  The Fayetteville Observer
