ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man on a motorcycle died Friday morning when he struck the side of a Cumberland County school bus during a U-turn near Bragg Boulevard and Andy Street just before 8 a.m.—police said two students on the bus were not injured and the bus driver will not be charged.  WRAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State funds have given The School of Hope in Fayetteville $375,000 to buy land for expanding its facilities—Carolina Christian Academy in Thomasville also received $100,000 for remodeling, as part of a state plan to boost private school growth while critics warn public schools may suffer. Lawmakers say the funding aims to expand education options and meet growing enrollment needs.  CityView

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fort Bragg is working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation on a microtransit study to decide on new rideshare, bus, or scooter options on post — the study includes workshops, stakeholder meetings, and a mapping website. Officials said the study will be finished by summer 2026 to help service members and their families move around the post more easily.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • Fayetteville City Council voted 8-2 at a recent work session to accept an independent evaluation of the ShotSpotter gunshot detection technology. The council will review the evaluation findings—conducted by Duke Law researchers—and decide on a one-year contract extension at an upcoming meeting.  CityView

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study finds that PFAS filters can also reduce cancer-linked chemicals such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids—byproducts of chlorine disinfection. Fayetteville’s Public Works Commission will begin a $116 million project in 2026 to install a granular activated carbon system aimed at improving drinking water safety amid possible federal rollbacks.  WRAL
  • To meet the Sept. 24 vaccine deadline, the Cumberland County Department of Public Health is hosting free vaccine clinics at locations in Fayetteville and Spring Lake on Sept. 9, Sept. 16, Sept. 18, Sept. 22, and Sept. 23—families arriving early receive a free bag of groceries.  CityView
