  • Cumberland County Schools updated back-to-school guidelines yesterday and announced a new cellphone policy that limits device use in elementary classes while allowing limited use during class transitions in middle and high schools—bus drivers may order phones to be put away for safety.  ABC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leaders including U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, U.S. Rep. David Rouzer, and local officials will speak at the Greater Fayetteville Chamber State of the Community luncheon—scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Crown Exposition Center where over 500 tickets have been sold.  CityView
  • An Army survey shows over half of Fort Bragg soldiers were not satisfied with their barracks because of leaks, mold and slow repairs—more than 58% rated their housing poorly. Army leaders say they will use the feedback to guide repairs and improvements—work orders remain backlogged as renovations are planned.  CityView
  • Fort Bragg Garrison Commander Col. Chad Mixon is pushing to bring a DMV office back on post to cut long wait times for soldiers and families who now travel off post. He said on Aug. 20 at a Community Action Council meeting that he will raise the issue with state officials, including Gov. Josh Stein, at a conference next week while a self-service kiosk is planned for the coming months.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • A Fayetteville lawyer explained that if police stop you, you have the right to ask if you are detained and to walk away if you are not confined; drivers must show their license, registration and insurance and must alert officers about any weapon in the car to avoid extra charges. He added that officers need a warrant or urgent conditions to enter a home and advised contacting an attorney if you feel your rights have been violated.  The Fayetteville Observer
