CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra announced that the 2025-2026 season will be Stefan Sanders' final season as music director after nine years of expanding the orchestra’s programs through community collaborations+ live events and diverse guest artists. Sanders will step down to lead the Central Texas Philharmonic, and his last concert is scheduled for September 20.  Up & Coming Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayetteville State University's Planetarium and Observatory is updating its observatory—renovations include a dome replacement and equipment upgrades to enable remote operations—and Joseph Kabbes manages the project using grant funds and revenue while planning tours and student programs. The facility continues to serve 5,000 annual visitors and aims to expand STEM opportunities.  Up & Coming Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cumberland County Board of Elections voted 4-1 on Aug. 12 to keep Rick Murillo on the ballot for Fayetteville City Council District 5 after resident Melene Hatcher challenged his filing for not disclosing his 2012 felony conviction—Hatcher said she will appeal the decision to the State Board of Elections.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • Commissioner Glenn Adams was named Chair of the Fayetteville State University Board of Trustees today; he served as vice chair and previously chaired the board during the 2022-2023 term (a 13-member group).  Up & Coming Weekly
  • Fayetteville City Council voted 9 to 1 to delay rezoning for a proposed 7 Eleven at the corner of McArthur Road and Stacy Weaver Drive after residents raised concerns about increased traffic and air pollution, and they set a public hearing for Aug. 25 or soon after—residents argued the development could set a dangerous precedent for the neighborhood. The revised plan includes an 8 foot wooden fence and a 20 foot tree buffer to address safety issues.  CityView
  • Cumberland County unveiled new designs for its Unhoused Support Center that shrink the facility to 24,000 square feet and 100 beds—aiming to offer safe and dignified temporary housing for homeless residents. The board approved the rescoped project with a 6—1 vote and extended its contract with Barr & Barr for one year while officials plan the next phase to address urgent housing needs.  CityView
  • Fayetteville City Council member Courtney Banks-McLaughlin (who served three terms) left her District 8 race to run for mayor, saying the city needs new leadership to improve roads, safety, housing and jobs. She filed for the nonpartisan race (primary Oct 7, general election Nov 4) and joins a field of 10 candidates.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • The elections board voted 4-1 on August 12th to let City Council candidate Enrique 'Ranger Rick' Murillo stay on the ballot after noting mistakes on his form about a felony conviction — protesters held signs calling him a rapist and challenger Melene Hatcher said she will appeal the decision — and Murillo said he plans to sue for defamation.  CityView

  • Dr. Wes Jones, a retired doctor who has called Fayetteville home since 1983, became a patient last year when numbness spread from his foot to his calf and an MRI found severe lumbar stenosis — he underwent a five‐hour surgery at Cape Fear Valley run by Dr. Charles Haworth.
