- ➤ Friends of the Cumberland County Public Library is hosting a book sale at Headquarters Library from Aug. 11 to 17 to raise funds for library programs and services—members get early access on Aug. 11 from noon to 6 p.m. and the public sale follows on Aug. 15, 16 and 17 with most books priced at $1 or less and donations accepted at eight local libraries. - ➤ Fayetteville's first Wawa opened on Friday, Aug. 8 on Raeford Road, adding a new option for local shoppers and commuters. The Fayetteville Observer
- ➤ Wawa announced today that its new travel center will open on Aug. 28 at 630 Chicken Foot Road in Hope Mills, offering a hoagie-building contest for first responders and free giveaways for the first customers + the chain’s second Cumberland County location will provide expanded amenities for commercial drivers and travelers. - ➤ Fayetteville’s first Wawa convenience store welcomed about 400 customers at its grand opening on Aug. 8 on Raeford Road+ the event offered free coffee and t-shirts for the first 250 buyers+ and hosted contests between firefighters and police officers. The Fayetteville Observer

- ➤ Jessica Munch-Dittmar became the new executive director on Aug. 4 while longtime music director Stefan Sanders will leave after the 2025-26 season to work with the Central Texas Philharmonic—the orchestra will begin its season on Sept. 20 at Seabrook Auditorium on the campus of Fayetteville State University. - ➤ Today, several local groups are giving out free school supplies to help kids get ready for school (with FLOW Automotive offering supplies, snacks, and hockey game tickets) across Fayetteville. - ➤ Nine people applied to be the next Cumberland County sheriff after Sheriff Ennis Wright retired, and county commissioners will choose one at 9 a.m. Monday in room 118 at the Cumberland County Courthouse on Dick St in Fayetteville. The new sheriff must be at least 21, a qualified county voter, and free of felony convictions—a rule that guides the appointment for the remainder of Wright’s term until the November general election. - ➤ Gov. Josh Stein signed a proclamation at Fayetteville Technical Community College on Aug 6, declaring North Carolina a 'Do Your Part' state in a joint effort with Blue Star Families and the National Governors Association to support military families. FTCC President Mark Sorrells said the college served about 31,000 students—35% of whom were active duty or veterans—and offers programs to help service members transition to civilian careers.
