  • ➤ The Town of Hope Mills announced Elevate Hope Mills, a free three-phase program designed to boost the local economy and support small businesses and families. Phase One kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — later phases include a financial empowerment series and a six-week business accelerator program.  CityView

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ➤ North Carolina lawmakers passed House Bill 87 on July 30 to opt into a federal program that gives a tax credit for donations to qualifying K-12 scholarship organizations. The State Educational Assistance Authority will set the rules for nonprofits to secure up to $1,700 tax credits — and the bill now heads to Gov. Josh Stein for approval.  WRAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ➤ North Carolina law forbids leaving a child under 8 alone in a fire emergency — doing so may result in a Class 1 misdemeanor, and experts advise that children are typically not mature enough to be left unsupervised until ages 10 or 11. The regulation focuses solely on fire safety risks, while 36 states have no guidelines on leaving children home alone.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • ➤ Green Beret candidates will complete their final test in Special Forces training during the Robin Sage exercise from Aug. 1 to 14, managed by the Fort Bragg-based Special Warfare Center and School with training held across several counties, including local areas. Organizers have set strict safety protocols — notifying law enforcement and marking training areas — to prevent risks following a fatal mishap in 2002.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • ➤ U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins visited the Fayetteville VA Medical Center on Wednesday to discuss plans for improving care for veterans. He toured the expanded emergency department & dental clinic and said upcoming reforms will reduce wait times and boost referrals.  WRAL
  • ➤ The North Carolina House passed House Bill 245 by a vote of 109 to 7, which would let drivers renew their licenses online more often and remove the requirement for new drivers to record practice hours. The bill — aimed at reducing DMV wait times — now goes to the Senate for further action.  WRAL
