CRIME NEWS

  • Fayetteville grandmother Cornelia Moore (54) was arrested last week and now faces murder and child abuse charges for allegedly starving her 39-day-old grandchild, who died on May 3.  ABC 11
  • On July 23 at 11 p.m., Fayetteville woman Angela Cheveena Harrington, 37, allegedly struck a pedestrian on Robeson Street while impaired and with a child under 16 in the car, and she was arrested on July 24 at 2:30 a.m.—she now faces felony death by vehicle, felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor driving while impaired, child abuse, and possession of a stolen pistol charge.  The Fayetteville Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Fayetteville Police Chief Kem Braden filed paperwork yesterday to seek appointment as sheriff of Cumberland County after Sheriff Ennis Wright retired earlier this year — the Board of Commissioners will review applications until 4 p.m. on Aug. 4 and make a decision on Aug. 11.  ABC 11
  • On June 12, Cumberland County commissioners heard a pitch from Electus Governmental Affairs to hire a state lobbyist to assist with $126 million in funding requests for projects such as a new high school and county water system. The board has not decided if they will hire the firm and said a bidding process will be used if they do—officials already work with a lobbying service in Washington, D.C. for federal matters.  CityView
  • Fayetteville voters will elect a new District 3 council member on November 4 as incumbent Mario Benavente runs for mayor. Two candidates—Jeremy Wright and Antonio Jones—are set to compete to bring fresh leadership to the city council.  CityView
