  • On July 6th, Capt. Claudia Lima of the White Cross Volunteer Fire Department rescued flood victims at Camelot Village during Tropical Depression Chantal, even as her home on Old Greensboro Road flooded. She later moved in with her deputy chief after a GoFundMe page set up by Fire Chief Phillip Nasseri quickly surpassed its $4,000 goal—Lima is still waiting to hear about potential disaster relief funding.  WRAL

CRIME NEWS

  • A Fayetteville grandmother, Cornelia Moore, 54, was arrested about 1 p.m. on July 16 on the 100 block of Lamont Street—she is charged with first-degree murder and intentional child abuse after her 39-day-old grandson died of malnutrition and dehydration in May.  The Fayetteville Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dennis Smith Sr., father of former NBA player Dennis Smith Jr., filed his candidacy to run for a seat on the Godwin Board of Commissioners against four incumbents in Cumberland County—he is one of five candidates for four seats. The general election is set for Nov. 4 while early voting begins Oct. 16—voters may also mail absentee ballots starting Oct. 3.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • Fayetteville swore in its new police chief Roberto E. Bryan Jr. on Friday afternoon at Seabrook Auditorium—he formerly led the police at Fayetteville State University—and he assumed command on July 7 to tackle violent crime and staffing challenges.  ABC 11
  • Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin filed for reelection on Friday—reversing his June decision not to run for a fifth term, and he is now one of ten candidates in the race with the filing period closed at noon Friday. Colvin, who has led the city since 2017 as its longest-serving Black mayor, faces a primary on Oct. 7 and a general election on Nov. 4.  WRAL
