Good morning, Fayetteville. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 21st of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • Fayetteville man Shawn Antonio Davis, 39, was taken into U.S. Marshal custody in Boston on May 23 and booked into Cumberland County jail at 5:15 p.m. on June 19 on charges of first-degree murder and weapon discharge in connection with the March 8 shooting death of Laquarius Devontanious Dove, 28 at a mobile home park in Breezy Hill.  The Fayetteville Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cumberland County ended contract negotiations with the Salvation Army to reopen the Fayetteville shelter because of disagreements over funding terms and building safety concerns — unpaid invoices and mold issues halted progress. County officials said they will continue working with community partners to establish a long-term, safe shelter solution.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • On Monday, Hope Mills’ Board of Commissioners approved a performance-based incentive for Project Shade—a planned $10 million industrial development at 103 Tom Starling Road that is set to create 45 full-time jobs with an average pay of $38,000 by 2026 and boost annual tax revenue by $50,000 if the company meets gas line and stormwater control requirements. The board also passed a $22 million town budget with amendments totaling $236,000 and set future meetings on June 30 for public input on a charter amendment and July 7 for a vote on the measure.  CityView
  • Fayetteville’s Cumberland County Sheriff Ennis Wright announced he intends to retire and resign at midnight on June 30 after serving 23 years on the job. He asked commissioners to appoint Major Jonathan T. Morgan while Chief Deputy C. Jack Broadus will serve as acting sheriff — the reasons for his retirement were not disclosed.  ABC 11
  • The state Senate is reviewing a bill that passed the House on May 7 to force makers of forever chemicals to pay for removing PFAS from public water systems — the measure targets Chemours for decades-long water contamination near the Fayetteville Works Plant and may let the DEQ order payment and take legal action, though it remains unclear if it will cover the Public Works Commission’s planned filter.  CityView
  • Local law enforcement agencies in North Carolina now have 21 signed or pending ICE agreements that let officers use limited immigration enforcement programs (jail enforcement, task force, or warrant service models) while 629 similar agreements exist nationwide and six states restrict such partnerships. The report shows that local agencies are choosing different levels of participation in federal immigration enforcement.  The Fayetteville Observer
