CULTURE NEWS

  • Fayetteville played a historic role during the American Revolution when delegates met at the Old State House to ratify the U.S. Constitution and fifty-five Patriot supporters signed what became known as the Liberty Point Resolves. A 250th anniversary commemoration will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 21 — at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Fayetteville.  Up & Coming Weekly
  • Fayetteville Pride Festival will be held at the new Crown Expo Center on Saturday, June 21 with free admission and extended hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event will feature headliners, local and regional performers, educational booths and dedicated kids and teen zones while organizers plan designated adult beverage areas (for those aged 21+) and climate-controlled comfort (to beat June heat).  Up & Coming Weekly
  • A free ceremony to mark the 250th anniversary of the Liberty Point Resolves will be held at 10 a.m. on June 21 at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Fayetteville. Historical organizations are co-hosting the event, which commemorates the 1775 document that declared Cumberland County residents' intent to rebel against British rule — a key moment in our local history.  The Fayetteville Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Municipal offices in Fayetteville, Hope Mills and Spring Lake will be closed Thursday in observance of Juneteenth while trash collection in Fayetteville will be rescheduled—household and yard waste pickup is moved to Wednesday and Spring Lake’s bulk pickup is canceled. All Cumberland County services including courts, libraries and animal control will remain open as usual.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • A federal bankruptcy court will decide this week whether the settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family will bring over $3.26 million to Cumberland County and about $383,000 to Fayetteville over the next 15 years. The funds may help expand harm reduction services—such as a potential inpatient substance use treatment facility—if county officials approve further steps to fight the opioid crisis.  CityView
  • On Monday, June 16th, county commissioners banned explosive targets at outdoor gun ranges in areas outside city and town limits in Cumberland County—violators face misdemeanor fines of $250 for a first offense or $500 for repeat offenses. They also raised the required distance between a shooter’s target and nearby buildings from 200 to 225 yards to address residents’ concerns about loud and disruptive explosions.  CityView
