  • Captain Stephen Shakeshaft said kitchen fires have been the top cause of home fires after 50 incidents in 2024, so the fire department is installing automatic stovetop fire suppressors in at-risk homes using 911 call data and HUD-approved area maps — about 50 units have been given out so far — and more will be distributed soon.  CityView

  • Tawante Shree Sykes, 38, died when a train struck her near Chance Street in Fayetteville—police notified her next of kin and are investigating the accident.  WRAL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Employees at The Friend’s Table in downtown Fayetteville reported not receiving their pay on a Friday morning in May — they confronted owner Portia Grady on May 10, prompting a police call and a no trespassing order. The restaurant closed permanently later that week due to safety concerns while public outrage over unpaid wages grew.  CityView

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Carolina has recognized Juneteenth as a state holiday and towns including Fayetteville plan celebrations on June 19, a day that will mark the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The day has been a federal holiday since 2021—although some events in other cities have been canceled amid political shifts.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • County officials on June 4 voted 5–2 to cancel the new Crown Event Center project and instead renovate the existing Crown Theatre and Arena near the airport—citing rising costs and a focus on fiscal responsibility. They will explore funding options as they determine how best to use the allocated funds—while continuing to support downtown development.  The Fayetteville Observer
