  • Fayetteville will host many Father's Day weekend events with a gospel jazz brunch at Bethel Christian Assembly Saturday at 6 p.m. and a Corvette display at Fort Bragg Saturday at 11 a.m., while families can also enjoy a crab feast, Latin Night in Hope Mills, a guided hike at Cape Fear Botanical Garden, Cars & Coffee at Hope Mills, a snake workshop at Smith Lake, a marketplace, a Woodpeckers game at Segra Stadium at 5 p.m., and a film screening at the Cameo on Sunday—each offering memorable ways to celebrate dads.  Up & Coming Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, June 20, Rock'n on the River will feature local performers TCB and Women N Children First at Campbellton Landing at 1122 Person Street. The event will see TCB performing from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Women N Children First from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.—attendees will pay a $10 parking fee and fifty percent of beer sales will benefit the Karen Chandler Trust Cancer Charity.  Up & Coming Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Carolina lawmakers are considering House Bill 468 which would regulate kratom and ban synthetic versions by limiting the concentration of the chemical 7-OH. The measure passed a House committee Tuesday — it would require licensed retailers, age restrictions, and warnings on packaging — and is aimed at protecting consumers.  WRAL
  • Cumberland County commissioners will resume talks today on the future of the Crown Event Center in downtown Fayetteville after pausing plans in March for a law firm review. Officials will review new cost estimates and parking issues—community feedback will help guide the project’s next steps.  ABC 11
  • Gov. Josh Stein started a new advisory council on Tuesday to set tougher rules for cannabis products and help erase past minor marijuana offense records—aiming to keep dangerous THC products away from children and protect adults. The group, which includes law enforcement officials, lawmakers, and health experts—will advise the state and work with the legislature on any future move to legalize marijuana.  WRAL
  • Fayetteville City Council discussed plans for a Pallet Shelter village to offer temporary housing for the homeless—staff will bring the proposal to the City-County Liaison Committee in August for county input. Council members raised concerns over costs and zoning—some suggesting that county partners might better manage the project.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • Paramedics Hannah Thompson and Jessica Haines from Cumberland County EMS made history last month by becoming the first all-female team to win the NC Emergency Medical Services Expo’s EM Today Paramedic Competition on May 4 in Greensboro. They prepared for the contest through rigorous training — handling simulated cardiac and trauma emergencies — which enhanced their readiness to provide effective patient care.  Up & Coming Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • On June 1st, the FDA updated a tomato recall from H&C Farms—distributed between April 23rd and 28th to Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina—to Class I after warning that salmonella may cause serious health effects or death. No illnesses have been reported yet, but the bacteria can survive in dry conditions for weeks and in wet ones for months, posing a risk to consumers.  WRAL
