CRIME NEWS

  • Fayetteville police arrested a juvenile and 18-year-old Quincy Case for their alleged roles in a May 21 shooting at a Wendy’s on Skibo Road — Case faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm, and driving offenses after a car chase while a woman shot in the incident is expected to recover at Cape Fear Medical Center.  WRAL
  • On Monday night, a Fayetteville man chased alleged thieves after seeing people stealing from his property, and his pursuit led to a crash on Hummingbird Place when he rear-ended another car that flipped, damaged powerlines, injuring at least one person & leaving another on the run.  ABC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cumberland County Schools launched its annual free meals for kids summer program on Monday—officials said it provides 2,000 to 4,000 meals a day to children. The 30-year-old program saw usage grow from 40,000 to 91,000 meals last summer amid rising hunger concerns.  ABC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cumberland County commissioners received updated cost estimates and project evaluations for the stalled $145 million Crown Event Center on Gillespie Street on Monday and will meet later this week to decide its future—public input is expected.  CityView
  • State lawmakers will meet today at 10 a.m. to consider a bill that raises the age to buy tobacco and vape products from 18 to 21 to align with federal law—aiming to curb youth vaping in classrooms, where three students on average are reported to use these products. The proposal also includes a plan for a tobacco retail sales permit to help monitor vendors.  WRAL
