GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Josh Stein has called for a special fentanyl control unit to investigate trafficking even though overdose deaths have dropped 30% since 2023. The proposal, which asked for $2.5 million a year but has received only $1.2 million from the North Carolina House, will be voted on later this year.  WRAL
  • Fayetteville City Manager Doug Hewett will introduce the city’s 26th police chief today at City Hall at 12:30 p.m.—the new chief will succeed Kem Braden, who retired on March 31 after a 29-year career.  CityView
  • A new bridge on Strickland Bridge Road opens today as part of the I-295 Outer Loop project, bringing changes to local traffic including a permanent closure of a section of Century Circle — a new signalized intersection at Strickland Bridge, Stoney Point and Barefoot roads has been implemented. Drivers should use caution near the work zone, and if weather delays occur, the changes will take effect on June 2.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • On Friday, May 30, Fayetteville announced Roberto E. Bryan Jr. as the new police chief—following Chief Kem Braden’s retirement on March 31—and he will soon tackle issues like youth and gun violence as the city now enforces a yearlong curfew for those aged 16 and younger.  ABC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cape Fear Valley Health has expanded its network of clinics from 34 to 93—with plans to reach 100 by next year—to improve access to both primary and specialty care for local patients. One Fayetteville clinic doubled its patient visits and now leads as the largest hospital-based podiatry center in the country.  CityView
