  • Fayetteville Young Life will host a pickleball tournament on May 31 at 10 a.m. at Rowan Park on 725 W Rowan St—registration opens at 9 a.m. The event will feature music, food, giveaways and prizes to raise funds supporting youth programs in our community.  Up & Coming Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hope Mills commissioners reviewed a proposed conservative fiscal budget setting the operating budget at $22,083,000 for the fiscal year starting July 1 and ending June 30 with a tax rate of 45 cents per $100—this is the lowest rate in a decade even as some services face reductions. The board also approved a five-year $72,000 contract with Schnabel Engineering for dam inspections and an $11,500 amendment for a new police K-9 to help balance a funding shortfall.  CityView

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials linked cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers Inc. and sold by Fresh Start Produce between April 29 and May 19 to a salmonella outbreak that sickened 26 people in 15 states—including nine hospitalized—with North Carolina among the affected areas, and the FDA urged retailers to stop selling these cucumbers.  The Fayetteville Observer

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Aloha Safari Park in Cameron began as an animal sanctuary in January 2010 and was later purchased by Scottie and Kim Brown in July 2021 — the 60-acre park now houses 600 animals from zoos, rescues, and donations. The park offers drive-through and walking exhibits and hosts special events while it is open six days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — families in the area enjoy close encounters with a wide variety of animals.  Up & Coming Weekly
