Good morning, Fayetteville. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 14th of May.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kathy Keefe Jensen, a Fayetteville City Council Member, announced she is running for mayor — competing with Mayor Mitch Colvin, Council Member Mario Benavente, and former candidate Freddie de la Cruz. She said her campaign will focus on public safety, strategic growth, and quality city services with the primary scheduled for Oct 7 and the general election on Nov 4.  CityView
  • Fayetteville City Manager Doug Hewett presented the draft fiscal budget for 2025-2026 on Monday showing a 13-cent decrease in the property tax rate to 44.95 cents per $100 and keeping stormwater and solid waste fees the same — the $312.5 million plan also adjusts downtown business taxes and provides funds for police, fire, and street projects. Council work sessions are scheduled for May 15, May 22, May 29, and June 2 — a public hearing on May 27 and possible adoption on June 9 will follow.  CityView
  • Fayetteville City Council introduced a draft youth protection ordinance (aimed at curbing youth gun violence) that would impose a yearlong curfew on juveniles 16 and under by restricting their presence in public spaces between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Council member Mario Benavente raised concerns and requested data from Charlotte (citing a 300% increase in juvenile homicides in 2024) before the council votes on the ordinance May 27.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • A bill that passed the House Rules Committee may let drivers have a two-year grace period to renew their licenses — a change lawmakers say could ease DMV delays — though they warn drivers to renew promptly to avoid fines in other states. The proposal also includes funds to study DMV issues and develop solutions.  WRAL
