  • On Thursday, over 100 Fayetteville high school graduates were honored at the Our Community Salutes ceremony as they enlisted in the U.S. Armed Services — all military branches were represented and local leaders noted the event's rapid growth. Retired U.S. Army Col. John Gobrick said enrollment nearly doubled since 2023 and praised the students for taking this important step.  CityView

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 500 graduates received doctorate, master’s, bachelor’s and associate degrees at Methodist University’s spring commencement on May 3 at the Crown Coliseum—keynote speaker Scott Hamilton earned an honorary degree and encouraged graduates to improve lives while awards recognized outstanding service and academic achievement. The ceremony celebrated academic success and set the stage for future community contributions.  CityView

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fort Bragg has opened a new centralized office for the Exceptional Family Member Program on the fourth floor of the Soldier Support Center (off Normandy Drive) to bring together medical care, family support, and human resources in one spot. The program, which helps nearly 6,000 family members (the first of its kind in the Army), was built after 18 months of planning to better serve soldiers and their families.  CityView
  • A proposed law called the Fostering Care in NC Act would standardize how parents petition to reconnect with their children after foster care removal, following a recent WRAL documentary that exposed gaps in the system. The bill passed the House earlier this week + it now heads to the Senate as lawmakers and advocates work toward giving parents a second chance.  WRAL
  • After the Salvation Army closed its Pathway of Hope shelter on April 15, leaving 50 to 60 beds unavailable, Cumberland County allocated $400,000 to fund three months of emergency housing for those in need. The money will cover 50 beds at Cornerstone Christian Empowerment Center and hotel rooms for families and single women—officials said informal operations could begin next week as they work on longer-term solutions.  CityView
