  • Fayetteville veteran-owned Kraken-Skulls—a one-stop shop with a barbershop, tattoo parlor, bar, and T-shirt printing shop—faced rising costs on May 1 as tariffs increased prices on shirts and supplies. Owner Chad said he absorbed some of the cost hikes to keep his business competitive.  ABC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local groups celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Fayetteville by hosting festivals, dance events & community fairs that honor Mexican heritage and the historic Battle of Puebla. One event is a craft fair at Gaston Brewing Taproom from noon to 4 p.m. tomorrow at 421 Chicago Drive & it brings the community together to remember its roots.  CityView
  • Fayetteville residents honor their rich heritage this Cinco de Mayo by celebrating the unlikely 1862 victory at the Battle of Puebla with various cultural events. Gaston Brewing Taproom will hold a fiesta from 12 to 4 p.m. tomorrow at 421 Chicago Drive—featuring 25 vendors, food trucks and music.  CityView

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cumberland County high school, college and university graduations are set to begin today at Methodist University at 10 a.m. at the Crown Coliseum and continue through early June at Fayetteville State, Fayetteville Technical Community College and Cumberland County Schools—most events need no tickets and will be livestreamed.  The Fayetteville Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Major Tandra Denise Adams, chief jailer of the Cumberland County Detention Center, died unexpectedly on May 2. A dedicated officer since 2002 who started a backpack giveaway for students, she was honored with a departmental memorial—her cause of death is not yet known.  The Fayetteville Observer
  • The historic downtown Market House will get repairs to fix bad woodwork, replace rotting louvers and windows, and repaint the clock tower after new millwork is installed. American Woodworkery & a specialty vendor will update the clock mechanisms to help keep the building safe for years to come.  CityView
  • North Carolina Rep. Charles Smith introduced HB114 to expand state hiring preferences to include active duty service members, veterans and military spouses in state jobs—this move aims to reduce the current job vacancy rate. The bill, which received a favorable committee vote in April, will next be considered by the Committee on Commerce and Economic Development before it moves to the Senate.  CityView
