CRIME NEWS

  • A 35-year-old man named Jamal Andre Holliday was charged Wednesday with felony hit-and-run after police linked him to a fatal crash on April 12 near N. Reilly Road and Telfair Drive, and he is held at Cumberland County Detention Center ($35,000 secured bond).  ABC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Anna Meyer, who has led the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra since 2022, will resign on May 23 — her family is moving to Minneapolis for her husband's new job and the board has formed a search committee to find a new executive director.  CityView

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state named Paul Tine as the new DMV commissioner, replacing Wayne Goodwin, and he will start on May 6. Tine—who has owned an insurance agency and served in the state House—says he will work to reduce long DMV wait times and fix staffing issues.  WRAL
  • On Wednesday, the NC House passed House Bill 171 that bans state agencies from engaging in diversity, equity and inclusion programs—stopping DEI training and requiring state audits—and the bill now goes to the Senate.  WRAL
  • The NC House Transportation Committee advanced a bill that would reduce the learner's permit period for 16- and 17-year-olds from nine to six months—eliminating school endorsement letters and driving logs. If passed by the General Assembly, the changes will take effect October 1 and end December 31, though some lawmakers say the changes could increase new driver risks.  WRAL
