CRIME NEWS

  • Fayetteville police arrested Tyrique Williams at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, on April 16 for the first-degree murder and concealment of Annie Lock, whose remains were found in a Robeson County pond after she had been missing since August—and records show the pair share a daughter born in 2023.  The Fayetteville Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Methodist University and Cape Fear Valley Health placed the final beam on their new medical school building on April 15 (with community leaders in attendance) as the project makes progress toward opening in 2026. The $60 million facility (pending accreditation) will train students to address the area's doctor shortage.  The Fayetteville Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Fayetteville City Council approved a new agreement with Cumberland County that will share 50% of sales tax revenue beyond fiscal year 2022—expected to add between $2.5M and $3M in revenue next fiscal year—to help cover rising budget shortfalls.  CityView
  • North Carolina lawmakers advanced bills to let lottery winners claim prizes without revealing their names, which would change the rule that now only protects winners of over $50 million. A Senate committee approved an amended bill yesterday to let winners of over $5 million claim prizes anonymously—while a House bill would allow any winner to remain private, with identities still reported to tax authorities.  WRAL
